Bailey, Ruby Hazel -
A graveside and interment service will be held for Ruby Hazel
Bailey, 90, on Sunday, June 1, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Clearfield
cemetery. Ruby passed away November 5, 2002 as a result of
congestive heart failure, and a memorial service was held in Des
Moines, Iowa where she lived at that time.
Ruby Hazel Bailey was born November 1, 1912, in Clearfield,
Iowa the eldest daughter of Milo and Cora (Ruby) Bailey. She
was proceeded in death by her parents and sisters Myra and Isabel,
and her brother, Milo.
Ruby grew up in Clearfield and later the family moved to Stuart,
Iowa. As an adult she lived with her sister Myra in Omaha and
Sun City, then moved to Adair, Iowa to be with her sister, Isabel.
In 1992, at age 80, she moved to Des Moines, where for the first
time in her life she was able to live independently. Ruby excelled
as a seamstress and in needlework. She sewed for private
customers, took in alterations, was always making something for
her many nieces-much to their delight! In later years, she also
volunteered with Al-Anon in Sun City, and spent countless hours
listening and giving encouragement to those in AA.
On November 1, 2002, Ruby celebrated her 90th birthday—an
accomplishment for which she was quite proud. No one in her
family had ever lived that long before! Woven throughout large
part of those 90-years is Ruby's relationship with Jesus Christ.
She quietly lived out her faith which was shaped and strengthened
in her trials of sickness and infirmity.
At age 3 she developed an infection from a bruise on her leg.
The leg seized at the knee, and when the Dr. straightened it they
put her iron enclosed cast to the hip for 6 months. They forgot she
was growing, which resulted in one leg being shorter than the
other. Abscesses developed as a result of TB of the spine (Potts
Disease) and often it seemed that she would not live through the
sickness and pain that resulted This begin a time of trips to Iowa
City Children's Hospital.
