John A. Blauer, 65 years old, of La Vista, Nebraska, formerly of Decorah, IA died on Monday, August 15, 2011. John died in his son's home in Kenyon, MN, surrounded by loved ones.
He was born March 5, 1946 in Tingley, Iowa. John graduated from Onamia Minnesota High School in 1964 and received a BA in history from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa in 1968. He married his college sweetheart Cindy Hinz on Dec. 28, 1968 where they lived together in Decorah, Iowa before relocating to La Vista, NE in 2005.
John worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of NE until his death. He previously managed the Decorah Lumber Yard from 1969-1986 and owned Discount Liquor of Decorah, Iowa from 1989-2005. While residing in Decorah he was treasurer and president of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Elks Lodge and Silver Crest Country Club. He was a man who lived to work. When not working, John loved to fish, play cards, and spend time with family and friends.
John is survived by his wife Cindy of 42.5 years and his children: Richard (Jessica), of Kenyon; Jory (Mea), of Chicago; Stephanie (Chris) Fitzgerald, of Vero Beach, Florida; Galen (Shannon) Crozier, of Holmestead. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, brother Larry (Sherry), and mother in law Barbara Hinz.
There will be a gathering to celebrate John's life at the Stonehearth in Decorah, Iowa on Saturday August 27, 2011 from 3-8 PM. John fought a courageous 16 month battle with cancer and to help others learn and fight, John donated his body to science. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made to the American Cancer Society.

John's parents were the late Darold and Rose Mary Baker Blauer, grandson of the late John and Dolly Blauer of Tingley, Iowa, the late Ethel Daniels Baker of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, the late Lyman Henry Baker of Kellerton, and step grandmother Helen Lucile Baker of Kellerton.
