OBITUARY ~ HUGH TEALE, JR.
Hugh Teale, Jr., 94, son of Hugh "Pop" Teale & Minnie Belle (Miller) Teale, Sr., was born September 16, 1916 in Kellerton, Iowa. He passed away Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the Panora Nursing & Rehab Center.
He graduated from Guthrie County High School in 1934. He then went on to Iowas State University for 1 year. Hugh returned to Panora to help work in the family restaurant. He also toured with the Nick Nichols Band for awhile. On June 30. 1940, he married Merna Searles in Panora. They began their married life working in the family restaurant. When WWII broke out, Hugh enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Lieutenant Teale became a B17, B24, and B29 pilot instructor. Following his discharge in 1945, the family returned to Panora. The Teales purchased the local Hardware Store and the family helped run the store while Hugh worked for Westinghouse, selling appliances. In 1957, Hugh went to work as a rural mail carrier. He retired after 21 years in 1978. During his retirement, Hugh stayed busy with the Lion's Club, including a stint as District Governor, as well as with the Masonic Lodge. Hugh also was a driving member in developing the Guthrie County Historical Village in Panora. First came the old railroad depot and while doing some work on his parents home, a log cabin was discovered beneath layers of siding and other additions. The log cabin was eventually moved to the museum. Hugh also enjoyed wood carving and playing his saxophone.
Hugh was a long time member of the Panora Church of the Brethren and the Panora Christian Church, a 50 year member of both the Panora Lion's Club and Masonic Lodge, and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Lake Panorama Association Board.
He is survived by his wife; Merna of Panora, children; Susan (John) Heiland of Adel, Frank (Sandi) Teale of Panora, and John (Kris) Teale of Maryville, MO. Ten grandchildren and 20 great grand-children. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brothers; Rex and James, and an infant sister; Thelma
