OBITUARY - GLADYS BELLE COIE FOWLER

Gladys Belle FOWLER, 97, Kansas City, MO, passed away Monday, February 7, 2005, at the home of her daughter Carol HOYT. Memorial services will be held at First Calvary Baptist Church, 3921 Baltimore, Kansas City, MO, on Friday, February 11 at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Tingley, IA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the First Calvary Baptist Church.

Gladys was born June 30, 1907, in Tingley, IA, and grew up in Cedar Rapids, IA. She graduated from Coe College, taught school, and worked at Santee Indian Reservation, where she met and married Millard M. FOWLER in 1933. He was a teacher and coach and past owner of Westport Printing Co. in Kansas City from 1943 until his death in 1959. As she raised her family, she was also the bookkeeper for the business.

Gladys was a longtime member of First Calvary Baptist Church and a faithful member of her Sunday School class. She was always affectionately called "Grandma Flower" by her family. Her interest in flowers led her to judge's training for local iris shows, as well as membership in the Hemerocallis Society. She was an avid reader, loved music, and played the piano through her 96th year.

Gladys was a woman with a beautiful smile and a wonderfully sincere greeting for everyone. She collected angels and was truly our angel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents Robert T. and Carrie Belle COIE, and brothers Howard, Rawson, and Clarence COIE.

Survivors include five children, Donna J. (Bert) SAUNDERS, Raymore, MO, Marilyn J. LEMKEN, Wellsville, KS, Dale R. (Mary) FOWLER, Overland Park, KS, Paul E. (Margaret) FOWLER, Everett, WA, and Carol R. (Ron) HOYT, Kansas City, MO; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The children of Gladys would like to express their warm appreciation to their sister Carol, for taking responsibility and providing loving care for their mother in her final years.
