OBITUARY - WILLIAM LEROY "BILL" WARD

William Leroy WARD, son of Ardis "Slim" Leone and Merle Lucille (CANNON) WARD, was born on August 22, 1936, at Wiota, Iowa. He passed away on Friday, July 14, 2006, at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 69, following a lengthy illness.

Bill was raised in the southwest Iowa area. He graduated from Mt. Ayr High School with the Class of 1954. On November 24, 1967, Bill was united in marriage to Bonnie Geneva (GARNER) in Mt. Ayr.

Bill was a grocery man most of his life starting out working at the Hy-Vee stores in Mt. Ayr, Villisca and Indianola. He later worked at Ayrliner in Mt. Ayr and for HyKlas and Safeway in Red Oak. In 1972, he began work at Shenandoah’s Safeway where he worked until it closed. Following the closing of Safeway he worked for Eaton Transmission, worked at the Tall Corn Motel as the night clerk and last worked at Sack N Save in Shenandoah until retiring due to health reasons. He was a member of the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church where he was baptized and joined on June 2, 1974. He served on the board of deacons for eight years. Bill was also a member of the Shenandoah Elks Club and the Shenandoah Lions Club, receiving Lion of the year in 1981.

Nearest and dearest to Bill was his family. He especially enjoyed spending a lot of time with his grandchildren since his liver transplant on November 1, 1994. He also liked following the New York Yankees and Chicago Bears. He loved family vacations, going to social work meetings with Bonnie, and keeping the squirrel and bird population fed. He could often be found sitting outside with his Diet Coke watching the birds and squirrels. He enjoyed visiting with people and never met a stranger. Bill will be remembered for being quite a jokester.

Preceding Bill in death were his parents; and three brothers, Robert, Dennis and Tom WARD.
