OBITUARY - ALFRED L. "FRED" MOHR

GOWRIE, IA - Alfred L. "Fred" MOHR died Friday, May 8, 2009, at his home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Gowrie, with Pastor Jane SHEPHERD officiating. Burial will be in Gowrie Township Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Peterson Post No. 431 of Gowrie. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, one sister Doris, and three brothers Dwight, Hollis and James. Fred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jessie, and their children Lora SMALLEY and her husband Dennis of PATON, Catherine PARDOS and her husband George of Golden, Colo., Jerry MOHR and his wife Donna of Gowrie, Steve MOHR and his wife Ruthann of Gowrie, and Dick MOHR and his wife Kelly of Liberty, Mo.; grandchildren Debra PONTIUS, Danille (Kent) CURTIS, Darcy SMALLEY, Deonne (Jessie REED), Jason MOHR, Corey MOHR, Jodi FERRY, Kristin MOHR (fiance Chris BEHRENS), Korryn (Justin) JOHNSON, Kyla MOHR, Christine PARDOS, Jessica PARDOS, Nicholas MOHR, Christopher MOHR, and Amanda MOHR; seven great-grandchildren, Logan, Lucas and Landon PONTIUS, Hannah and Grace CURTIS, and Keenan and Carter FERRY; and sister Peggy and her husband Elbert SKARDA of Tingley, Iowa.

Alfred "Fred" Loren MOHR was born December 6, 1925, in Cromwell, Iowa, to Griffith William and Edith Hannah (BRAY) MOHR. He graduated from Tingley High School in 1943. Fred then joined the United States Navy with his best friend, serving in the South Pacific during WWII as a Radioman Second Class. He received several medals while in the Navy. After his discharge from the Navy in 1947, he attended Northwest Missouri State University. Fred married Jessie SAVILLE in 1949 in Mount Ayr, Iowa. They made their home in Ringgold County before moving to Fort Dodge in 1954 and then to the Callender area in 1956. Fred took several college courses to become a journeyman electrician. He worked as an electrician at New Idea in Fort Dodge until it closed. The family then moved to Fremont, Iowa, where Fred worked as an electrician at John Deere in Ottumwa. He retured from John Deere in 1988. After retiring, Fred and Jessie moved to their home in Gowrie.

Fred thoroughly enjoyed his years of retirement. He looked forward to many family fishing trips to Minnesota. He especially enjoyed yard work, his rose garden and feeding and watching birds. Fred was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan and John Deere collector. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gowrie, the American Legion Post 431 and the Electrical Union.
