OBITUARY - MARIETTA EIGHME
Marietta EIGHME was born in Wilmington, Illinois, November 4, 1901, to Rufus and Susan Margaret (WILLIAMS) EIGHME. She passed away April 7, 2002, at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center. She spent her youth in Ringgold and Jefferson counties in Iowa. After graduating from Tingley high school in 1920, Marietta attended the University of Iowa in Iowa city where she earned three degrees: a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts, an impressive accomplishment even by today's standards. Marietta was devoted to her study of art history and her practice in the painting studio. She shared her talents by teaching high school art in Tingley and the Ottumwa school system for many years. She traveled extensively to pursue her love of fine art and enjoyed a successful career at the prestigious and nationally renowned Chicago Art Institute of Chicago and the Pratt Institute in New York City.
Marietta returned to Tingley in the early 1970's to enjoy her retirement among her beloved family. She had a great love for animals, especially cats. In addition to being a faithful member of the Tingley United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, White Shrine and Daughters of the American Revolution. Marietta lived the last four years of her life at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center where she celebrated her 100th birthday last November.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Margaret, Frankie and Josephine.
Her surviving family of many cousins will fondly remember and celebrate Marietta's intellect, wit, generosity, and most of all, her appreciation of beauty.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Tingley with Reverend Jeff FLAGG officiating.
