NESBIT – Services for Roland I. LYONS, 84, will be at 10 a.m. today at Brantley-Phillips Funeral Home, Hernando. Interment will be in Nesbit Cemetery. LYONS died Oct. 20 at his home. He leaves his wife, Mildred LEADFORD LYONS, Nesbit; one daughter, Norma LYONS MATTINGLY (Denis), Yellville, Ark.; three sons, Roland Michael LYONS, Nesbit, Walter G. LYONS (Kathy), Madison, Danny LYONS, Pensacola, Fla.; sister, Luella TROUTMAN (Burl), Millington, Tenn.; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
LYONS was born Feb. 10, 1924 in Maloy, Iowa. He was a member of Nesbit First Presbyterian Church. He served in the Navy during WWII on the Navy Destroyer Bernadou, DD153. He worked with the U.S. Corps of Engineers on the Mississippi River, working his way up to assistant chief engineer on the Motor Vessel Mississippi. He left the Corps of Engineers in 1963 and began LYONS’ Repair Service in Nesbit until he retired. For many years he wrote a column for the DeSoto Times under the pen name L. P. SOPEN and published a newspaper called the Nesbit Recorder. He spent many years researching DeSoto County history and genealogy.
