IN MEMORIAM.

Elizabeth (CAMPBELL) SHIELDS was born in Indiana April 5, 1837, the daughter of John and Susanna (WILLIAMSON) CAMPBELL. She married John H. SHIELDS, Jr. in Diagonal, Ringgold County, Iowa, in 1852. They were the parents of twelve children: Mary Ann SHIELDS, wife of Samuel W. DECKER; Westly Nolan SHIELDS, born March 2, 1856 and died November 25, 1927 with interment at Hopeville Cemetery, husband of Catherine P. MILLER; Charles Emery SHIELDS, husband of 1st Mary Elizabeth GULLETT and 2nd Martha Helen JOHNSON; Susan Jane SHIELDS, wife of Adam H. DECKER; Joseph Hopkins SHIELDS, born May 27, 1864 and died May 29, 1941 husband of Clarinda Clara BEAMAN (1864-1949), both interred at Hopeville Cemetery; Effie May SHIELDS, born April 5, 1866 and died in 1934 wife of Stephen Douglas GERMAN (1858-1932), both interred at Gregg Cemetery, Clarke County, Iowa beside their son Vern W. & their other son Albert Lee interred at Hopeville Cemetery; Abraham C. SHIELDS, born September 5, 1870 and died at the age of eleven months on August 16, 1871 with interment at Hopeville Cemetery; Cora Bell SHIELDS, born August 5, 1879 and died March 16, 1961, wife of Marion GERMAN (1865-1924), both interred at Gregg Cemetery, Clarke County, Iowa; William Henry SHIELDS, born February 20, 1869 and died July 13, 1938 with interment at Hopeville Cemetery, husband of Minnie A. DUTCHER; Clara Otis SHIELDS, born 1874 and died 1965, the wife of Thomas A. BULLOCK (1869-1951), both interred at Oak Hill Cemetery, Thayer, Union County, Iowa; Dora Della SHIELDS, wife of Charles R. YOUNG; and Elizabeth SHIELDS, wife of Ira E. DENLY.

Elizabeth (CAMPBELL) SHIELDS died at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 7 days on August 12, 1910, Union County, Iowa, with interment at Hopeville Cemetery, Hopeville, Clarke County, Iowa.

NOTE: Elizabeth's epitaph reads, "Asleep in Jesus." John H. SHIELDS, Jr., husband of Elizabeth (CAMPBELL), was born February 22, 1832 in Indiana, one of 10 children born to John H. SHIELDS, Sr. (1798-1860) and Jane (CAMMEL) SHIELDS (1802-18991). John, Jr. died at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 27 days on October 21, 1907 in Union County, Iowa with interment at Hopeville Cemetery where his parents are interred. John's epitaph reads, "His toils are past, his work is done, He fought the fights, his victory won." There is a G.A.R. flag holder beside Elizabeth and John's gravestone.
