OBITUARY - MRS. CATHERINE SHIELDS.

Mrs. Catherine SHIELDS, daughter of John and Maria Jane [(GARRISON)] MILLER, was born April 26, 1863, in Clarke county, Iowa, and departed this life September 10, 1928, at the age of 65 years, 4 months and 15 days. She was a member of the Christian church. She was united in marriage to Wesley (sic) N[olan]. SHIELDS February 2, 1882. To this union five children were born, of whom one, the oldest Stella May, preceded her father (sic) to the brighter world beyond. The children living are John SHIELDS of near Beaconsfield, Mrs. Etta HAILEY of near Kellerton, Claude SHIELDS of Logan, and Mrs. Nina BLACK of Leon. She leaves to mourn her death these four children, also two sisters, Mrs. A. C. COOPER of Thayeir (sic) and Francis SANFORD of Newton, Mo., also four brothers of Newton, Mo., also 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild. The funeral was held at Beaconsfield and burial at the Hopeville cemetery [Hopeville, Clarke County, Iowa]. Rev. C. J. BIDDLE, of Kellerton, was in charge of the service.

NOTE: Catherine's husband Westley NOLAN was born in Clarke County, Iowa, on March 2, 1856, the son of John H. SHIELDS, Jr. and Elizabeth (CAMPBELL) SHIELDS. He died at SHIELDS home near Beaconsfield on November 25, 1927 with interment at Hopeville Cemetery. Westley's father John H. SHIELDS, Jr. was born February 22, 1832, and died October 21, 1907. His mother Elizabeth (CAMPBELL) SHIELDS was born April 5, 1837 in Indiana, and died August 12, 1910, Union County, Iowa. John H. and Elizabeth were interred at Hopeville Cemetery.

Catherine (MILLER) and Westley Nolan SHIELDS were the parents of six children: Stella May; John Henry SHIELDS, husband of Nettie (HODGES); Etta Bell SHIELDS, born 1890 and died 1975 with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa, the wife of Henry Erman HAILEY (1886-?); Claude SHIELDS; Nina (SHIELDS) BLACK; and child SHIELDS.
