February 18, 1892OBITUARY - MRS. LESTER H. NORTHRUP
Mrs. Lester H. NORTHRUP died at her home, three miles north of Garden Grove, Iowa, on the morning of January 27, 1892. Mary Agnes WOODBURY was born at Sutton, Massachusetts, October 17, 1817. Her father died when she was about thirteen years of age and the family settled near Auburn, New York. She went west with her sister, the late Mrs. J. H. WOODBURY, in whose family she made her home, and about 1846 they removed from Adrian, Michigan to White Pigeon. During the residence there she made many friends and was a much valued member of the Methodist Episcopal Church as well as of the choir. She taught a young ladies' school there which gave eminent satisfaction.
In the autumn of 1854, the WOODBURY family came to Garden Grove and in January, 1856, deceased was married to L. H. NORTHRUP at their residence by Rev. J. R. CARY. Two daughters blessed their home--Hattie W., wife of C. A. DAVIS and Edna P., wife of Eldon HENDRICK, Denver, Colorado.
Mr. and Mrs. NORTHRUP left the Grove after a few years and occupied a farm of three hundred and twenty acres, two miles north; here they lived over a quarter of a century. The failing health of the younger daughter making a change of climate necessary, induced them to sell and remove to Mt. Ayr, where they had possessions.
In 1884, Mrs. NORTHRUP's health utterly failed and she was brought to her daughter's, which place has since been their home. For several years past she has enjoyed much in long visits to the daughter in Colorado, and in October went to the states of New York and Pennsylvania to visit three brothers and numerous relatives and friends, returning on Thanksgiving Day. She had suffered much, not knowing what it was to feel well for many years, but bore it all most patiently. Her last illness was of but two weeks' duration, a sudden cold resulted in pneumonia.
A sorrowing throng assembled at the house to pay their last respects, yet she will live in memory while life lasts. Much sympathy is felt for the lonely husband and family and very much for the daughter who could not be present from infirm health. Mr. George WOODBURY and Mrs. Libbie YOUNG, to whom she was a second mother, were present, and many of Mr. NORTHRUP's relatives of Humeston. It is needless to say she was a favorite with all who knew her. Mr. and Mrs. NORTHRUP united with the Presbyterian Church in Garden Grove in 1860. Rev. Robert BEER conducted the exercises. The singing was excellent and one almost wished she could hear it. The long procession made its way to the Garden Grove Cemetery, where so many of the family have been laid away.
