DEATH of J. I. NEWTON.
J. I. NEWTON, a respected citizen of Benton township, died Thursday, December 21, 1893, aged 66 years and 5 months, and after a long sickness from cancer in the stomach. Mr. NEWTON was born July 28, 1827, in Sussex county, New Jersey. He spent his youth and early manhood in that state. He came direct to Ringgold county, Iowa, in October 1859, and with energy began life on the prairies. Forty years ago he married Elizabeth G. BATELY of Warren county, New Jersey, who still survives him. They had eight children, four sons and four daughters, all of whom are living. Mr. NEWTON was a quiet unostentatious man, and enjoyed the respect of his neighbors. For forty years he had been a member of the Odd Fellows. He was an earnest republican, and in his long eventful life only missed voting at two elections. He owned 360 acres of land in his township and was known as a good faithful farmer. The funeral took place from the United Brethren church and was conducted by Rev. NINE and the remains were interred in the Blockton cemetery.
