OBITUARY - EUGENE THOMAS MOSIER
Eugene Thomas MOSIER was born October 13, 1913 on the farm he called home for most of his life. The son of Joe and Mildred MOSIER, he joined older brother Arlo. He was later joined by a younger sister Charmion and brother Frank. Eugene attended the same one room country school where his siblings, many of his cousins and two of his three children got their educational start. He graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1932. A good athlete, Eugene played fullback on the undefeated 1931 football team and received honorable mention in the Des Moines Register All-Star Prep Honor Roll. He also participated in track and wrestling.
Eugene attended Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) where he graduated in 1941 with a degree in Agricultural Economics. He spent the WW II years working for the Agricultural Services Administration, returning to the home farm after the war.
In 1938 he married Selma, the love of his life. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary before Selma died in 2000. Selma and Eugene had three Children, Thomas, Margaret “Peg” and LuAnn.
Eugene loved the land he farmed and the animals, both domestic and wild that lived on the farm. Over the years he built a number of buildings on the farm, including the family home.
After retiring from farming in 1992 he and Selma moved to Mount Ayr. As Selma’s health deteriated he cared for her until she entered the nursing home shortly before her death. He moved to Clearview Estates in 2006 and in 2007 he moved to Clearview where he died February 14, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his wife Selma, his parents, one brother Arlo and sister Charmion.
He is survived by children, Tom (Linda) MOSIER of Raleigh, NC, Peg (Rev. Darryl) TORRIN of Denver, IA and Lu MOSIER and Dixie LEMME of Sioux Falls, SD; and Betty and Cecil DAVENPORT of Mount Ayr; grandson Cameron MOSIER of Raleigh; brother, Frank (Diane) MOSIER of Alameda, CA; sister-in-law Muriel MOSIER of Colby, KS; four nephews and 2 nieces.
