OBITUARY - CLEM EDWARD MATLAGE
Clem Edward MATLAGE, 76, of Beaconsfield died January 14, 2007 at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Clem was born in St. Mary’s, IA on July 24, 1930 to Frank and Minnie (COLE) MATLAGE. He grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Dowling High School. In 1947 at the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
On September 30, 1950 Clem married the love of his life, Lille Marie DAWSON of Des Moines, IA. Clem and Lil shared 56 glorious years of marriage.
They were blessed with 3 wonderful children, Terll (Kevin) BROBST of Oreana, IL, Edward (Denise) MATLAGE of Des Moines, IA, and Scott (Rhonda) MATLAGE of Indianola, IA, 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Clem had 6 siblings, Helen, Art, Lester, Dorothy, Fred and Frank.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Helen.
Clem worked for Super Value for 25 years. After retiring he farmed in Unionville and Lockwood, MO, before moving to Beaconsfield, IA in 1976. He was Post Master and Mayor of Beaconsfield for many years. He was a member of Ringgold Post #172 of the American Legion in Mount Ayr, he loved to fish, hunt and spend time with his family.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, January 18, 2007 from Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home, Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Clem MATLAGE, 76, of Beaconsfield died January 14, 2007, at Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 18, at Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. The Rev. Thomas Dooley will officiate the service. Burial will be in Ellston Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Ringgold Post No. 172. Open visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday with the family present one hour prior to services on Thursday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established in his name.
Clem MATLAGE, son of Minnie (COLE) and Frank MATLAGE, was born July 24, 1932, in St. Mary's. He graduated from Dowling High School in Des Moines. On Sept. 30, 1950, Clem married Lillie Marie DOWSON in Des Moines. He worked for Super Valu in Des Moines. He was a former postmaster and mayor of Beaconsfield. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of American Legion Ringgold Post No. 172. Survivors include his wife, Lillie MATLAGE of Beaconsfield; two sons, Scott (wife Rhonda) MATLAGE of Indianola and Edward (wife Denise) MATLAGE of Des Moines; daughter Terll (husband Kevin) BROBST of Oreana, Ill.; sister Dorothy ALDOFT of Trenton, Mo.; four brothers, Art (wife Viola) MATLAGE of Des Moines, Lester (wife Carolyn) MATLAGE of Winterset, Fred (wife Verlien) MATLAGE of Trenton, Mo., and Frank MATLAGE of Murray; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Clem was preceded in death by his parents and sister Helen GILGE.
