OBITUARY - LOWELL DUANE HOWIE

Lowell Duane HOWIE was born August 7, 1934 near Kent, Iowa to Clyde HOWIE and Marie (LANE) HOWIE and passed away on May 4, 2007 at his home in Mount Ayr surrounded by his family.

Lowell attended grade school in California then moved to Redding, Iowa in 8th grade where he graduated in 1953. On January 25, 1955 he married Alice Aileene SKINNER and served in the Airforce, stationed at Jacksonville Air Force Base in North Little Rock, Arkansas. During this time their only child, Cindy (HOWIE) JOHNSON was born.

Lowell worked for the Redding and Mount Ayr Schools for years following military service as a custodian, and then joined Iowa Southern Utilities in 1972 until his retirement in 1996. After retirement he enjoyed sacking groceries at CGI until his health failed.

Two of the most precious events in his life were the birth of his grandchildren, Amanda Marie (JOHNSON) McCURDY and Alana Breann JOHNSON who were born to his daughter, Cindy and husband Scott JOHNSON.

Lowell was a quiet, reserved man who enjoyed spending time with his family and being home. During his youth he was very active in sports and excelled in basketball. He enjoyed teaching his daughter how to play basketball and softball and spent many hours shooting baskets and playing catch with her. In his later years he enjoyed playing golf with his friends.

While fighting his illness, he so enjoyed his visits with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved to hear them tell about what was happening in their lives. His eyes would always light up when they walked into the room. Lowell could often be seen sitting on the tailgate of his pickup watching cars go by or sitting at the kitchen table watching sports on tv. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and going to the boat when he felt up to it. Even during his difficult illness, he was not a complainer and remained gentle and independent. His children will be forever grateful for the time they had with him and the life lessons he implanted in their hearts by his example of living his life by working hard and enjoying the love of his family.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; his brother-in-laws, Sam TAYLOR and Algie SAVILLE, his sister-in-law, Joanne HOWIE, niece Vickie SAVILLE and nephew James HOWIE.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alice of 52 years; his daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Scott JOHNSON of Mount Ayr ; his grandchildren Amanda and Kasey McCURDY of Ankeny, Iowa; Alana JOHNSON and Adam JACKSON of Mount Ayr; his brothers Virgil HOWIE and wife Jean of Mount Ayr; sister Aleine TAYLOR of Mount Ayr; sister Delores MOODY and husband James of Port Angeles, Washington; brother Leroy HOWIE of Creigton, Pennsylvania; sister-in-law Colleene SAVILLE of Mount Ayr and brother-in-law Donald SKINNER and wife Nancy of Mesa, Arizona, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.
