The Mount Ayr Record-News, 1928

DEATH of JOHN DOWLING.

Death claimed another early settler of Ringgold county and one of the county's most highly respected citizens when John DOWLING passed peacefully to his reward early yesterday morning. He had been in declining health for several years and his last illness covered a period of several weeks. He was born in Mt. Mellick, Queens county, Ireland, September 14, 1842, and was 86 years, one month and three days old.

Mr. DOWLING had been a resident of Mount Ayr since early manhood and was for many years engaged in the blacksmithing and wagon making business. He was known as an honest and compentent workman; fair and considerate in his dealings, and was respected for his sterling qualities as a man. He was one of the most companionable of men and held to that philosophy of life the application of which makes for the happiness of others. Ever happy and cheerful, with a kind word for those with whom he came in contact, he was a blessing to the community. He is survived by one son, John DOWLING, Jr., of St. Joseph, Mo., and two daughters, Mrs. M. E. FREELAND and Miss Sadie DOWLING of Mount Ayr. An extended obituary is not available for publication this week.

Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic church in Mount Ayr this (Thursday) forenoon at 10:30 and will be conducted by Rev. Father M. J. CULHANE. [Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.]
