Three Die in Car Truck
Collison Near TreynorTREYNOR-A 70 year old Council Bluffs man and a Wyoming couple were killed in a car-truck collision near Treynor Wednesday night.
Dead on arrival at Council Bluffs Hospitals were Harry Horn, Route 2, Council Bluffs, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kettler of Manville, Wyo. Mr. Kettler was 71, Mrs. Kettler 57.
The accident occurred about 10:30 p.m. at the bottom of a hill a half-mile west of Treynor on Highway 92.
Two others injured in the wreck were listed in fair condition Thursday at a Council Bluffs hospital. They were Mrs. Elizabeth Horn, 60, wife of Horn, and truck driver, Ray Cameron, 23, of Winterset.
Mrs. Horn suffered chest and side injuries plus head lacerations. Cameron suffered cuts above his right eye and an injured left arm. He was undergoing x-rays for [possible internal injuries.
ALL IN THE SAME CAR
All of the dead and Mrs. Horn were in the same car driven by Harry Horn. According to Horn’s son. Paul, the four were returning to Council Bluffs from Emerson where they were visiting relatives.
The livestock truck driven by Cameron was headed east, and from the impact of the crash apparently met the auto almost head-on. The car was hurled about 100 feet and the truck was sheared on all four wheels, Highway patrolman said.
Horn’s body was pinned along the front seat behind the wheel. A wrecker was needed to remove his body.
TRUCK HITS TRUCK
An oil transport heading down the hill moments after the crash skidded into the stock truck in trying to stop, Richard Forte of West Liberty, transport driver, was not injured and helped pull Cameron from the wreckage, sheriff’s officer reported.
The wreckage completely blocked traffic along Highway 92. Early arrivers at the scene said a fire broke out in the Horn car but was quickly extinguished.
The Kettlers, who have a son on Omaha, arrived in the Council Bluffs-Omaha area Tuesday morning.
The three traffic facilities bring to 21the total person killed in Pottawattamie County this year. Sixteen of the deaths have resulted from accidents outside Council Bluffs.
The tanker was empty when it rammed into the stock truck, possibly averting any further tragedy. "If it had been full they’re be a good fire,” Forte said.
A third collision resulted from the wreckage, but no one was hurt in it. A car driven by Gerald Dean Carson, 2587 Hartman Ave., of Omaha, hit the rear of one driven by Miss Nancy Goos, 26, Rte. 2, Council Bluffs, as she stopped in the line of traffic. Carson's car caromed off and fell down an embankment. He was held in custody for careless driving. His car was heavily damaged.
