Ralph Merscher was enumerated in the 1940 Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa census with his first wife, Opal (Roth) Merscher. According to Polk County, Iowa court records, they divorced in June 1948. Apparently during their 8 - 15 year marriage, they had no children.

Opal Mary (Roth) Merscher Elsberry's obituary in the Las Vegas Sun on February 5, 1998:

Opal Mary Elsberry, 86, of Las Vegas died Sunday in a local care center. She was born April 13, 1911, in Kansas. A longtime resident, she was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Thomas.
Desert Memorial Cremation and Burial Society, 1111 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is handling arrangements.

Thomas Elsberry's obituary does not mention children or step children --only nieces and nephews.
