Apparently the fire occurred on Thursday, December 5, 1901 and destroyed two major buildings. I didn't read everything from later newspapers but it sounded like the Des Moines branch was never rebuilt. Not positive on that but it sounded like that was the eventual outcome. In one article, the resident manager of National Starch Manufacturing Company was identified as W. T. Jones.
This is an interesting story, as one day after National Starch bought the Gilbert Starch Works in Des Moines, in 1890, the entire plant was wiped out by a fire. National Starch bore the entire cost of the fire then and rebuilt it only to lose it again in the 1901 fire.
There were several branch plants similar to the Des Moines plant as the main company headquarters was in Ohio. I did save the pages from the newspaper which had the story, as a PDF file. I have several other PDF files concerning the fire that I can email to you if you wish. Not the easiest things to read but the Dec. 5, 1901 newspaper isn't too bad. Let me know if you want me to send one, two or all of them.
