JAMES B HUSTON & HARPER FAMILY

HUSTON, HARPER

The cemetery is named for James B. Huston who in the 1800's ran a station and post office on the nearby stage line. He was the first Dallas county attorney. Huston and his wife Nancy and at least five of their children are buried in the cemetery. The first burial was in 1847, when "two small daughters of the Harper family going by wagon train to California" were buried, a marker reads. When the railroads arrived in 1867, the route was abandoned, and the cemetery was left in the middle of open land. Dallas county roads 335th Street and X Avenue eventually formed around the cemetery. This story was published in the May 18, 2006 of the Des Moines Register.
