Johnson, Vicky Sue Nicholas - 1952-2011

Vicky Sue Johnson, daughter of Edward Samuel Nicholas and Wilma Jean Noack, was born October 14, 1952 and died November 29, 2011 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 59. Vicky graduated from Perry High School. She had worked at the Woodward State Hospital School during school and for a period after. Vicky received her R.N. degree from DMACC in 1977.
Vicky was married to George Uken in 1979 and the family made their home in Perry. They were blessed with three children, Dorothy Sue, Jennifer Mae, and Henry David. Vicky was a stay-at-home mom. Vicky started her business career with Locale Anesthesia in Perry, Iowa as office manager. She worked for Signature Flight Service before becoming office manager for Jacobsen-Holz Corporation. Vicky worked at the Hotel Pattee in the Human Resources Department for a time and then launched her own business Vicky's Kitchen where she was known for good cooking and baking, especially delicious cinnamon rolls and sugar cookies. The community appreciated her catering service also. Vicky worked at Spring Valley Assisted Living before re-activating her Nursing license. She returned to Spring Valley as an R.N., serving as Staff Nurse. She later re-located to Des Moines, working as A.D.O.N. at Union Park Nursing Home. Vicky worked for Crystal Corporation as A.D.O.N. serving their facilities at Karen Acres, Genesis Senior Living, and visiting their other facilities, assisting with compliance issues. She was currently working at SilverCrest at the Woodlands in Clive as an R.N.
Vicky married Dennis Johnson on July 3, 2008. They were very happy together, riding motorcycles on many trips, sharing her love of "Z" scale trains, gambling at different casinos, looking for antiques, and her joy with their family and all the grandchildren. Vicky was known to work with wood and never backed down from a house remodeling job. She received her Master Gardener certificate from Iowa State in 1986 and put those skills to use, not only in her yard, but in the yards of many others. Vicky was preceded in death by her mother Wilma, the father of her children, George Uken, stepson Dennis "E.J." Johnson, and brothers-in-law Chip Wilson and Brian Fox.
Vicky will be lovingly remembered by her husband Dennis Johnson of Des Moines, IA; daughters Dorothy Smith of Des Moines, IA; and Jen Uken of Granbury, TX; son Henry Uken of Ft. Campbell, KY; father Ed Nicholas of Perry, IA; sister Carla Fox of Des Moines, IA; step-children Kirk Green (Jeanann); Kelly Kokemuller (Roy); Cheri Judge (Jody); Nancy Johnson; and Heather Gornick (Don) all of Des Moines, IA; and Mark Sullivan (Brenda) of Dubuque, IA; grandchildren Malorie Smith; Caleb Uken; Ashley Jackson; Kevin Green; Brooke Heisler; Robin, Courtney, Tanner and Tucker Kokemuller; Krista and Brandi Sullivan; Parker and Reagan Judge; Collin Stephens; Makaela Valdez; Aaleah Laire; Cade, Adam, and Tyler Gornick; Cheyne, Sawyer, and Tucker Lisk; aunt Norma Hull of Perry, IA; nephew Chad Wilson (Heidi), great nephews, Nick and Andrew Wilson of Des Moines, Iowa; mother-in-law Betty Hollingsworth; sister-in-law Barb Adams (John) all of Alamogordo, NM; brother-in-law Greg Johnson (Denise) of Des Moines, IA, other relatives and many friends.
Vicky died after a very brief illness November 29, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be Friday at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. Her service will be at 10 a.m. at Hastings with burial in Violet Hill Cemetery. Vicky requested that any memorials be directed to Ruth Harbor House, 534 42nd St., Des Moines, Iowa.
