The Reverend Canon William Lockhart Jacobs, age 94, of Des Moines died on Tuesday, November 29, 2011. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery.
Father Jacobs was born in Dyer, TN, one of five children of Mattie Belle and William A. Jacobs. The family moved to Nashville, TN soon after Father Jacobs was born.
Father Jacobs attended the University of the South, Sewanee, TN, graduating in 1941. He was ordained as an Episcopal Priest in 1943 after graduation from Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, VA.
Father Jacobs served as an active Episcopal Priest for forty years. His ministry included St. John's Church in Knoxville, TN, St. Paul's Church in Newport, AR, Christ Church in Springfield, IL and the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Des Moines. He retired after 20 years as Rector of St. Paul's in 1984. In 2006, he was made a Canon of the Diocese.
During his ministry in Des Moines, "Father Bill" was active in community activities. He served as President of the Des Moines Area Council of Churches, President of the Ministerial Association and President of the Health Planning Council of Iowa. He was elected to a seven-year term as a Broadlawns Hospital Trustee. In 1984, his retirement year, the Cathedral Church built a low income home for the elderly and handicapped as part of the church's outreach ministry in Christian mission. The home was named Jacobs Place as a tribute to Father Jacobs' ministry.
After his retirement, Father Jacobs remained active in the community, serving as an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau and assisting low income families and the elderly with income tax preparation sponsored by the IRS.
Father Jacobs was a member of the Wakonda Club, the Rotary Club of Des Moines and a Board Member of the Iowa Radio Reading Information Service.
He is survived by his wife, Marian Shanley Jacobs; three children, Elizabeth (John) Jones, William L. Jacobs, Jr. and John (Ann) Jacobs; four grandchildren, William Phelps Jacobs, Matthew Connor Jacobs, Shanley Brooke Jacobs and Megan Jacobs Capps; and three great grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Des Moines or the charity of the donor's choice.
