Bird, Mayta Alvina Sievers - 1934-2011

BIRD, MAXWELL, SIEPKER, SIEVERS, THORUP, VAN EVERA

Mayta Alvina (Sievers) Bird, age 77, of Clive, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 3 at 10 a.m. at Urbandale United Church of Christ.
Mayta was born May 29, 1934 in Powell, WY, the daughter of Walter and Caroline (Thorup) Sievers. The family moved to Albert City, IA in 1940. She graduated from Albert City High School in 1952. She went on to complete a Graduate Nurse degree from the University of Iowa, a Bachelor of Arts degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Iowa.
Mayta's life's work was devoted to persons with disabilities. She worked for the Illinois Department of Mental health, Chicago, IL, and the Iowa Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Denver, CO. She devoted her work and her personal time to those programs. She was very active in her professional organizations. Mayta was currently an active member of the Urbandale United Church of Christ, the Urbandale Garden Club and the Purple and Crimson Dollies Red Hat Group.
Mayta was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James and Leonard; and two brother-in-laws, Gary Maxwell and Richard Van Evera.
She is survived by her brother Harold (Elaine) Sievers, Chanhassen, MN; Marigrace Sievers of Cambridge, IA; Marjorie Maxwell of Kansas City, MO; Carol (Gary) Siepker of Albert City, IA; Phyllis Van Evera of Hinton, IA and Donald (Marilyn) Sievers of Huxley, IA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to her church.
