Charles E. "Eddie" Bassell, Sr., 86, passed January 6, 2012. Eddie was born in West Virginia into a large family, later moving to Springfield, Ohio, where he attended school and joined the Army in 1943. At wars end, he returned to Springfield and married Alma Coy, and started a family; later moving to Des Moines to work at Meredith Corporation Bindery and The Des Moines Register for 27 years, until his retirement. Eddie was a member of the VFW Post 9127, Beaverdale Neighborhood, and Holy Trinity Catholic Church for over 50 years.
Preceding him in death were his wife of 52 years, Alma Bassell; son, Charles E. Bassell, Jr.; and his ever faithful little yorkie, "Skooter".
Eddie will be greatly missed by his son, Robert Bassell and his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Patricia Baum and her husband, David J.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the service time on Tuesday. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Memorials may be made to either: Holy Trinity Catholic Church or Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
The family would like to thank all of Eddie's neighbors and friends for many years of watchful eyes.
