James L. "Pretty Jimmy" McDonald, 84, of Des Moines died on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Entombment will be at Resthaven Cemetery.
Jimmy grew up in Melrose, IA, one of the ten children of John and Grace (Martin) McDonald and lived in Des Moines most of his life. He was an IRS Officer for 33 years. He served as Chapter President, Vice President, Chief Steward and Board Member of the National Treasury Employees Union. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post 09127. He belonged to Holy Trinity and later Sacred Heart Catholic Churches. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and regularly playing cards with a group of lifelong friends including Bud and Ella Fisk, Joe and Maxine Novak and Vince and Theresa Schaeffer.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Geraldine in 2007; granddaughter, Gretchen Hummel; a brother and five sisters. He is survived by three daughters, Becky (Craig) Boese, Marla McDonald-Hummel and Carrie McDonald; eight grandchildren, Andrea (Robert) Savage, Erica and Alex Boese, Andrew and Michelle Hummel, Matthew and Brandon McDonald and Cheylen Mills; great granddaughter, Ruby Savage; and three sisters, Janice Fredrick, Lorraine McLeary and Mildred McClavy.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 29 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Lung Association.
