Donald L. Kassar, 75, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Manor Care Health Services of West Des Moines after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Michele Fravel of Manassas, VA, who died on May 14, 2012. Survivors are his wife of nearly 53 years, Geraldine "Gerry" Kassar; his daughter, Julie (Christopher) Black of Island Lake, IL; his son, Brian Kassar of Bozeman, MT; his son-in-law, Steven Fravel of Manassas, VA; grandchildren, Jennifer (Tyler) Abbott of Des Moines, Stephanie Fravel of Chicago, IL, and James and Mikel Black of Island Lake, IL; his sister, Sharon (Dennis) Sibert of Urbandale; sister-in-law, Judy (J. Richard) Hervey of Norwalk; brother-in-law, G. Michael (Ronda) Wiltgen of Boise, ID; four nieces and seven great nieces and nephews. In his quiet and laid back manner, Don was always interested and concerned about all family members and proud of their many accomplishments and achievements.
Don pursued a satisfying career with the Iowa Department of Human Services, beginning as a caseworker in Decorah, Iowa and advancing throughout the years gaining experience with multiple programs until his retirement from a bureau chief position.
Don was known for his respect for all people and for his sarcastic wit and sense of humor. He was an avid reader and enjoyed music, movies, theater, Hawkeyes, Cubs, dogs and cats and camping and fishing. His life-long passion from the age of eight was hunting, which he enjoyed with family members, his dogs and friends who shared his respect for the sport, guns, wildlife and conservation.
In accordance with Don's wishes, his body has been cremated and no memorial services will be held. Condolences may be directed to the family. His family expresses sincere gratitude to the staff and physicians from Manor Care, Methodist West Hospital Emergency Department, Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Iowa Health Hospice for their caring and compassionate care throughout the years.
