Donald J. "Don" Harmon, 92, of Madrid, formerly of Polk City, passed from this life on Monday, October 22, 2012 at the Madrid Home in Madrid. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, in the Sanborn Memorial Chapel at the Madrid Home, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service time on Thursday. Burial will take place at Polk City Cemetery in Polk City.
Don was born on the family farm in Madison Township, rural Polk City, Iowa on January 26, 1920, the son of Ernest J. and Greta (Hug) Harmon. He married Dorothy JaVerna Thompson on October 21, 1939, and to this union, three sons were born: Carl, Gary and Steven. Don was employed as a farmer most of his life and served many years on the board at the former Polk City Savings Bank, now known as Grinnell State Bank. He shined as a gifted woodworker and loved spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 73 years, Dorothy Harmon of Madrid; three sons, Carl (Bevra) Harmon of West Des Moines, Gary (Lois) Harmon of Polk City, and Steven (Vicki) Harmon of Alleman, IA; sister, Rose Marie Murry of Madrid; brother, John (Carol) Harmon of Polk City; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents.
