Nota Evelyn Woods Dutton, daughter of Bert Elias Woods and Viola Mae (Haltom) Woods, was born February 8, 1917 near Woodburn, IA. She passed away Friday, October 12, 2012 at Ramsey Village at the age of 95 years.
Graveside services will be 11 am, Saturday October 27, 2012 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola.
Her first few years of school were spent in Osceola; when the family moved to the farm, she attended school at Osceola #5 where she graduated from Eighth Grade. She went on to Osceola High School where she graduated with a Normal Training Teaching Certificate. While in High School, she participated in the Music Program - Glee Club, Mixed Chorus, Sextet and Mixed Chorus.
Nota taught in Rural Schools for a few years, one of which was the Home school that she attended as a child. During World War II, she worked as a Machine Operator in the 50 Caliber building at the Ankeny Ordnance Plant and Fort Mason Army Post Exchange in San Francisco as Sales and Kardex Operator. After the war, she returned to Des Moines to work at the Credit Bureau of Des Moines, American Legion Auxiliary (the assigned child desk), JC Penney Company as Personnel Manager, City Health Department as Deputy Registrar and Office Assistant and Statistician in Vital Statistics. Her last employment was at the State Health Department of Vital Statistics (Birth & Death Records).
Nota's weekends were spent doing telephone surveys for the Des Moines Register or as receptionist for Iowa Lutheran Hospital. She found volunteering for many organizations to be very rewarding.
Nota loved her family as she did most people and wished to be of service to everyone. Her hobbies were embroidery, gardening and house plants, collecting many things; and she was an avid reader. She especially enjoyed daily crossword puzzles and going to Prairie Meadows was an extra special treat.
Nota was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Nellie Cochran (Clifford), Lucille Mullen (John), Lillie Miller (Norman), Pauline Patterson (Claude); brothers, Alvin Woods (Beulah), Lester Woods (Mary), Laurel Woods (Margaret), Roy Woods (Theola) and Ross Woods (Alice); nephews, Merle Patterson, Rodney Woods and niece, Shirley A. Woods.
