Carl Junior Krohn passed peacefully Monday night November 5, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, in the company of his wife and two of his sons.
Carl was born July 29, 1928 and raised on the Century Farm homestead outside of Prairie City. He assisted working the farm and also worked at Maytag. Carl and his father would often shoot skeet and trap at the local Gun Club. After his marriage to Opal, Carl moved his family to a farm near Greenfield that he ran for nearly ten years. He often helped out his neighbors and enjoyed their company during various gatherings and worked in the local John Deere dealership. Carl and his family moved to West Des Moines in 1969, and all 4 boys graduated from Valley High School. He drove a semi truck, worked as a Security Guard and Driver, and operated Carl's Lawn Service, his own lawn, garden and snow removal business. He was an avid story-teller, some of which were actually true. Carl and Opal moved into Calvin Community in Des Moines this past January, where Opal will continue to reside.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Beecher Krohn and Elizabeth Newell Krohn; his siblings, Robert and Lois (Carter); and his son, Thomas. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Opal Huff Krohn of Des Moines, IA; his sons, Wesley and wife Julie of Newport News, VA; Douglas of Duluth, GA; Merle and wife Jolene of Fort Collins, CO; his grandsons, Brian of Richmond, VA, Edward of Newport News, VA, and Jonathan of New York City; and a handful of nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be Saturday from 12:30-2 at Merle Hay Funeral Home in Des Moines with services to follow.
