LAKELAND - Dr. William J. Kieffer of Lakeland, Florida died Sunday, February 14, 2010 from complications of a hemorrhagic stroke.

Born January 8, 1933 in Bellevue, Iowa to Arnold Kieffer and Myrtle McCarthy Kieffer, Bill grew up in Des Moines, Iowa attending Holy Trinity Elementary School and graduating from Dowling High School where he lettered in baseball, basketball and football. He was Valedictorian of his class.
Bill did his undergraduate work at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He attended the University of Iowa Medical School in Iowa City, Iowa. He was a member of the Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity and of the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical fraternity. He interned and completed a residency in Radiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. From 1962 to 1964 Bill served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force at Hunter Air Base in Savannah, Georgia. He practiced Radiology for seven years at St. Joseph's Hospital in South Bend, Indiana before moving his family to Lakeland in July, 1971, when he joined the Watson Clinic. He received his certification for the American Board of Radiology in 1963. He was a member of the American College of Radiology, the Radiologic Society of North America and the American Institute of Ultrasound. Throughout his life, Bill was an avid golfer and cyclist.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Loren. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Peggy of Lakeland, son, Michael (Fi), son, Tom, daughter, Christine Taylor (Bill), all of Lakeland, daughter Leslie Tannebring (Jeff) of Los Angeles, California. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Christopher Kieffer of Atlanta, Elizabeth Kieffer of Jacksonville, Sydney Fazio, Gillian Fazio, Faith Taylor, Max Kieffer and Nicholas Kieffer all of Lakeland, sisters Anne Richardson (Bill), of Des Moines, Iowa and Mary Tuerk of Peoria, Illinois.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Heath Funeral Chapel with Rosary recitation and prayers from 6 - 6:30 p.m. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, February 19 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
