Verne C. “Slim” Weikert, 85, of the 1400 block of 60th Street died of a heart ailment Thursday at Hospice Kavanagh House. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, of which he was a member. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery.
Mr. Weikert was born in Guthrie Center and had lived in Stuart before moving to Des Moines in 1935. He was a retired painting contractor, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society and Urbandale American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, playing poker and cooking.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Lou Hermann of West Des Moines; two sons, Paul of Ferrysburg, Mich., and Tom of Seattle; a sister, Florence Eddy of Dysart; two brothers, Richard and Roy, both of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday at Westover Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 5 to 6 p.m. and where a vigil service will be held at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or his church.
