Pioneer Resident Dies in Fort Dodge; Funeral in Laurens

Mrs. Esther Tuttle, 87, a pioneer resident of the Laurens community, died Friday at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Dodge where she had been a patient since March 27. She had suffered a broken hip in a fall Feb. 17.

Funeral services were held Monday, at 11:30 a.m. at Hitchcock Funeral Home and at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church. The Rev. Leland F. Grove, pastor of the .church, officiated. Mrs. Leland F. Grove, accompanied by Mrs. Dale Peterson, sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Pall bearers were Pat Qulnn, George Peters, Art Naughton, Clem Alig and Morris Plantz, all of Pocahontas, and Charles Dusing of Palmer. Burial was in the Laurens cemetery.

Born in 1872

Esther Ann Hawley, one of 10 children of Mary and George Hawley, was born Nov. 14, 1872, at Ogdensburg, N. Y. At the age of eight she came with her parents to the Laurens community, to settle on what is now known as the Hawley farm.

On Oct. 23, 1890, she was married to George Tuttle. They were the parents of nine children, four daughters and five sons. The family lived on several farms in the vicinity of Laurens, and also in the town of Laurens. Mr. Tuttle died in 1940.

Mrs. Tuttle made her home in Ware from 1944 to 1952. Then she lived with a daughter, Mrs. .Enoch Johnson, at Remsen until Oct. 25, 1959, when she entered the Hovenden Memorial Good Samaritan Home in Laurens.

Christian Church

At an early age she united with the Christian Church in Laurens. She was also active in community affairs, being one of the first members of the Laurens Woman's Club, a member of the Royal Neighbors, and one of the first 4-H leaders in Pocahontas County.

Survivors include four daughters, Leone (Mrs. L. C.) Krug of Pocahontas, Esther (Mrs. W. W.) Anderson of Pocahontas, Denah (Mrs. William) Reiners of Remsen, and Doris (Mrs. Enoch) Johnson of Remsen; one son, Theodore Tuttle of Laurens; 18 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two. sisters, Mrs. Fred Roewe of Laurens and Sophronia Hawley of Milford, Utah.,

She was preceded in death by her husband; four sons, Gordon, Freddie, George and Douglas; four brothers and three sisters.
