Daniel John and Mary Theresa Fitzpatrick Family

Daniel J., son of Richard and Ellen (Carroll) Fitzpatrick, was born in Kilkenny County, Ireland in November 1887. He was the youngest of thirteen children. He came from Ireland to the United States aboard the Mauretania in August of 1908. He located at Vail, Iowa near his sister, Ella, for a few years and then came to Palo Alto County. It was in Palo Alto County where he met Mary Theresa Kelly, daughter of James J. and Mary M. (Morris) Kelly. Mary was born June 26, 1895 in Palo Alto County. Dan and Mary were married February 23, 1916, at Graettinger, Iowa.

Dan and Mary farmed in Palo Alto and Emmet Counties for many years. During the “Gold Rush” in the Graettinger area in 1921, samples from a number of farms, including the D.J. Fitzpatrick farm, were sent to an assayer in Nevada. For some years, every device known to mining was tried but no way was ever found to extract the gold at a profit in this area.

Dan passed away in May of 1948 and Mary in November of 1971. The Fitzpatricks were the parents of six children.

A son died in infancy.
