John "Jack" Nylen, 71, died Friday, Nov. 4. 1994, at a hospital in MInneapolis, Minn. of apparent heart failure.
A memorial service will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Larkin Funeral Home with Pastor Marvin Mueller of Morningside Lutheran Church officiating, and the Rev. Ernie Guyer of the Church of the Way co-celebrating. The body will be cremated. The ashes will be buried in Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion. A prayer service will be 7 p.m. Monday with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Nyleen was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Vermillion, S.D., the son of John and Bertha (Iverson) Nylen. He attended Central High School. He married June E. Wiese June 6, 1947, in Sutherland, Iowa. She died Aug. 7, 1980, in Sioux City. He married Leslie Ann Becker Dec. 24, 1987 in the Little Brown Church in the Vale, in Nashua, Iowa.
Mr. Nylen was raised in Sioux City. He lived in Paullina, Iowa, from 1953 to 1963, when he returned to Sioux City. He was self-employed. Early in his career, he held a seat on the Chicago Merchatile Exchange. He operated the J.R. Nylen Ltd. Brokerage Co., dealing with the nation-wide manufacturing, buying and selling of pet food products and the meat by-products industry.
Mr. Nylen was a member of the Morningside Lutheran Church and was affiliated with the Church of the Way.
Mr. Nylen was a Staff Sargant with the 224th Army Air Force during WWII, serving from 1943 through 1945.
He was preceded in death by he parents; and two brothers, Claire and Kenny Nylen.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Jon C. and Leesa, Mark A. and Mary Ellen, and Scott D. and Julie, all of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Tanya and William Aden of Tampa, Fla., and Nancy Jo and Larry Branch of Sioux City; a step daughter, Pandora Marie Treglia of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Kathleen and Ralph Lassner of Sacramento, Calif.; and aunt, Eleanor Iverson of Sioux City; and two nieces and a nephew.
Pallbearers were Rod Porter, Jim Smith, Arlene Johnson, Russ Whitlock, Jack Lassner. and John Priestley.
