Richard “Dick” Thomas, 82, of Sloan, Iowa passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at Burgess Health Center, Onawa, Iowa.

A funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at Skien Lutheran Church, Albaton, Iowa with Reverend Craig Bock, officiating. The family requests those attending to wear your favorite sports team apparel. A recording of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Dick’s obituary. Burial will follow in the Fairview Township Cemetery, Albaton, Iowa. A visitation will be 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Monday, January 6, 2025 at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Richard was born December 5, 1942 in Marathon, Iowa, the son of Leslie “Bud” and Doris (Larson) Thomas. He grew up in Marathon and the family moved to Sloan, Iowa. Dick graduated from the Sloan High School with the class of 1960.

Richard and Patricia were united into marriage December of 1960. To this union three children were born, Kim, Mike and Janean. The couple later divorced.

Richard and Jane Callaghan were united into marriage July 21, 1988.

Dick worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation, then started farming 1976 to 1987. He worked for MCI for several years until his retirement. After retirement, Dick was a part time mail carrier and had a paper route, which he enjoyed.

Dick enjoyed racing his stock car #82 over the years at the Interstate Speedway in Jefferson, South Dakota where he won 2 track championships and Raceway Park in South Sioux City, Nebraska where he won 1 track championship. He was a lifelong Yankee fan, Kansas City Chiefs fan, and an Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Dick enjoyed going to the casino, gardening, and attending sporting events.

Dick loved his family very much especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Skien Lutheran Church in Albaton.

Survivors include his children, Mike (Cindy) Thomas of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Janean Zortman of Sloan, Iowa; son-in-law, Todd Trobaugh; step-son, Doug Porter of Sioux City, Iowa; very special friend, Glenda Kilker of Sioux City, Iowa; grandchildren, Ashley (Charlie) Hagestrom of Whiting, Iowa, Cori (Josh) Eickholt of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Bobbi Jo Steinhoff, of Des Moines, Iowa, Tanner (Natalie) Steinhoff of Des Moines, Iowa, Brooke (Gavin) Umbdenstock of Urbana, Iowa, Brett (Tricia) Thomas of Walker, Iowa, Amber (Derrick) Zortman of Whiting, Iowa; nineteen great-grandchildren; sister, Jane Guerra of Waco, Texas; sister-in-law, Barb Thomas of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Doris (Larson) Thomas; spouses, Patricia (Lander) Thomas, and Jane (Callaghan) Thomas; brother, Russell Thomas; daughter, Kim Trobaugh; and great-grandson, Kayden Solma.
