Douglas “Doug” Manford Bonine, 75, of Onawa, IA, passed away in his home with those that loved him on January 31, 2024.

A memorial graveside service will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with Jack Gibler, officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Army and the David McNeill American Legion Post #129, Onawa, Iowa. A recording will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Doug’s obituary. A luncheon will follow the graveside service and will be held at the First Christian Church, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Doug was born November 19, 1948, in the country, near Parsons, KS to Joyce Lee Wintjen and Ratliff Rex Bonine. As a young boy, he spent much of his time with his mom’s siblings and his brother, Max Bonine. Even after his family moved to Iowa, he maintained a very close relationship with his family in Kansas, including many of his uncles, specifically George Wintjen. The boys were always getting into mischief and there is often a story to be told of their adventures, many making you wonder how they made it out of their adolescence alive.

Doug graduated from West Monona High School in 1967. He enlisted in the Army in 1969 and served his county during the Vietnam War. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Metal, Vietnam Campaign Metal, and The Army Commendation Medal.

Later, he returned home, and married Vicki Little, and developed a passion for riding and customizing motorcycles. During this time, he grew close with his brother-in-law, Boone (Danny Little), who shared many of the same hobbies. Doug was the proud father of three children, Rachel, Christy and Douglas.

Doug loved to be outdoors and was likely to be found hunting or fishing. He loved to hunt deer, pheasant and quail but he didn’t stop there. He went to Canada on a successful black bear hunt. Doug went to Texas to fish in the gulf, wild boar hunt, and even went on a successful antelope hunt. Among the many bucks he harvested through the years, he bagged an Iowa trophy deer, measuring 167 6/8 with a traditional recurve bow.

Doug spent most of his career working for Monona County Secondary Roads Department. He was the foreman for several years before retiring in 2011. In 1996, Doug and Vicki were able to move into their dream home in the country. Doug had many skills and one of those, was carpentry. He designed and built their home primarily on his own.

After retiring, he added gardening to his hobbies. You could find him out laying on the ground, picking weeds from his garden. He enjoyed raising and training Brittanys’ and Labrador Retrievers. The caliber of his hunting dogs increased drastically after retiring, as his passion for this hobby grew. Our hope is that local hunters with dogs from Doug continue to think of him as they enjoy their hunts. Over the years, he has had incredible house dogs that became his best friends, named Zeke, Fudd, and more recently, Cy, that were never too far from his side.

Vicki and Doug made a great pair over the years for many reasons, one of them being that he loved sweets and she, thankfully, loved to bake. If you ever saw him pack a lunch, it consisted of Little Debbie snacks and coffee and that is it. To relax, you could often find him sitting on the front porch with his .22, shooting the tops off of dandelions or in his recliner, enjoying old westerns.

Doug was loyal and dedicated to his family, specifically to his mom. Joyce could always count on him to do anything she needed and he was her rock. After retirement, Doug enjoyed taking vacations with Vicki. He especially loved the black hills but always made time to frequent Coffeyville, KS. Doug’s final wishes were fulfilled by spending his days, at home, surrounded by his loving family and his faithful labs.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Vicki Bonine (Onawa, IA), mother, Joyce Bonine Beedle (Onawa, IA), daughter, Rachel Peterson (Zionsville, IN), daughter, Christy Allen (Coffeyville, KS), son, Douglas R Bonine (North Sioux City, SD). Several grandchildren, Jonathan Allen and Ryan Liddell (Claremore, OK), Taylynn Allen (Coffeyville, KS), Jarred Peterson (Camby, IN), and Cody and Jadon Tinkle (Mooresville, IN), and many other relatives, and friends.

Doug is preceded in death by his father, Ratliff “Bud” Bonine and brother, Max Bonine, along with several close friends and relatives.
