LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT filed Nov. 10, 1909 Will Record No. 3 Page 269
I, Elizabeth Chase of Osage, in the County of Mitchell, Iowa, and State of Iowa, being of sound mind and memory do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament.
1st. I order and direct that my executors hereinafter named pay all my just debts and funeral expenses as soon after my decease as conveniently may be.
2nd.After the payment of such debts and funeral expenses, I do give, devise and bequeath unto my beloved daughters, Alice Maria White of Spokane, Washington, and Edith Viola Thomas of St. Paul, Minnesota, all my personal effects of every kind and description such as jewelry, clothing, books, pictures, household furniture, dishes and bedding to be divided between them as they may agree.
3rd. After payment of my debts and funeral expenses and the disposition of my personal effects as foresaid, I do direct that a suitable monument to cost not less than $500 be erected upon the family burial lot of Osage, Iowa.
4th. After payment of by debts, funeral expenses, the disposition of my personal effects and the erection of a monument as aforesaid, I do give, devise and bequeath unto my beloved daughters, Alice Maria White and Edith V. Thomas, and unto my six beloved granddaughters, Alice R. Halstrom, Anabel Rood, Florence Rood and Margery Rood, all of St. Paul, Minnesota, Bessie Chase of Osage, Iowa and Emma Lois Libby of Spokane, Washington, all and singular the residue of my property both real and personal which I now have, may die possessed of or may be entitled to , their heirs and assigns forever; to be divided among them in the following manner, to-wit; one quarter to Alice Maria White, and one quarter to Edith Viola Thomas, my two daughters aforesaid, and the balance to be divided share and share alike among my six granddaughters hereinbefore named.
5th. It is my desire however, and I do hereby direct that should my beloved husband, Jacob L. Chase, whose health is very feeble, survive me, that my said property be not divided or distributed or a monument erected until after his decease, but that my executors shall hold all my said property during
my said husband’s lifetime and shall sell only as much thereof as shall be necessary to the comfortable
maintenance of my said husband during his life, and the discharge of his funeral expenses at his death,and I do hereby charge my executors to provide him a comfortable home and loving care during his life, the provisions herein made for my said husband’s maintenance during his life is, however, in lieu of any right or interest whatsoever, either by courtesy or other law, which my said husband might or would have to any of my said property at my decease.6th. I do make, constitute and appoint my said daughter, Alice Maria White and my son in law Zenas H.Thomas, of St. Paul, Minnesota, executors of this my last will and testament, to sere without bond,and I do hereby direct that they may sell any or all of the personal or real estate or both as in their judgment they may deem advisable for the better execution of this instrument at either public or private sale and pay the debts and make distribution of the proceeds.
