Frances Thompson Van Houweling, 91, of Iowa City and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, Aug. 29, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Howard Lord officiating. Interment: Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Visitation is open at the funeral chapel, with family present 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials: Mahaska County Ecumenical Cupboard.
Mrs. Van Houweling was born Nov. 13, 1907, in Burlington to Dr. C.C. and Cora Ingaman Thompson. She grew up in the home of her grandparents, R.B. and Lucinda Thompson. She attended Rochester County school, graduated from Tracy High School in 1926, and attended William Penn College. She was a teacher in the rural schools of Mahaska County. On March 18, 1933, she married Gerard Van Houweling and became a farmer's wife and homemaker. He died in 1973. They moved to Oskaloosa in 1949. In September 1997, she moved to a retirement home in Iowa City. She was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was a member of Faith Circle of King's Daughters and a former member of Oskaloosa Women's Club, Mahaska Hospital Auxiliary and Mahaska County Historical Society.
Survivors included four daughters and their husbands: Geraldine and Maxwell Tow of Deposit, N.Y., Sherrill and William Cleveland of North Liberty, Janet and Marvin Winter of Postville and Carolyn and William Norris of Albuquerque, N.M.; a son: Tony Van Houweling of San Diego, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Gerard Van Houweling; two brothers: Harold Thompson and Nicholas Thompson; and a sister, Patricia Larimer. (The Oskaloosa Herald, date unknown)
