Harold A. Mayer, 89, of 183 Highland, Oskaloosa, Iowa died Tuesday, August 15, 2000 at the Pleasant Park Estates in Oskaloosa.
He was born March 15, 1911 on a farm north of Eddyville, Iowa to Otto and Lillie Kent Mayer. He grew up in that area and attended Eddyville Grade School and graduated from Eddyville High School in 1928. He attended William Penn College and in 1932 earned a degree in education from Iowa State Teachers College, now University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
He married Eleanor Hoy in 1935 in Oskaloosa. She died August 28, 1992. He lived most of his life in Oskaloosa and owned and operated Mayer's Standard Service Station for over fifty years, 1932 until 1984 when his son John took over the operation of the business. He and his wife Eleanor owned a farm near Lacey, Iowa since 1946.
He was a Vice President of the Milky Way Dairy in Oskaloosa and served on many boards including: Oskaloosa Water Board for 17 years; Mahaska County Hospital Board for 12 years; Forest Cemetery Board for 12 years; Iowa Blue Cross Board; YMCA Board; Boy Scout Committeeman; and Standard Oil National Advisory Board represenitng the Kansas City District.
He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the Elks Club, Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce and served several years on the Alumni Association of the University of Northern Iowa.
He was also an avid trout and walleye fisherman and an outstanding cook.
He is survived by his son Dick and his wife Florence of Helena, Montana, and his son John and his wife Janice of Oskaloosa. He has seven grandchildren - Kristi O'Hollearn and husband Joe of San Diego, CA, Leah Odzinski and husband Bob of Brashear, MO, Flora Coakley and husband Albert of Fayetteville, AR, Ben Mayer and wife Crystal of Gilbert, IA, and Bill Mayer of Oskaloosa, IA. He is survived by nine great grandchildren Kiley and KAsey Mayer of Scottsdale, AZ, Richard and Jacob Mayer of Sahuarita, AZ, Hannah and Jonah Coakley of Fayetteville, AR, Violet Odzinski of Brashear, MO, and Joey and Jackson O'Hollearn of San Diego, CA. He is also survived by a niece - Janet Lind of LaJolla, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister Helen M. Russell.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 18, 2000 at 10:30 AM at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Randy Mayer of Good Shepherd United Church of Christ of Sahuarita, Arizona preciding. Interment in Forest Cemetery. (from Harold's funeral card)
