Wednesday, June 30, was the 69th birthday of Mrs. Ella Cunningham & a number of neighbors & friends surprised Mrs. Cunningham & spent a social afternoon with her. A pot luck lunch was served to 12. Out of town guests were Mrs. Oliva Erwin & Mrs. Will Howard of Canton. Mrs. Cunningham received many gifts as a special remembrance of this occasion.Robert Lingo, youngest son of Mr. & Mrs. C. J. Lingo, left from Sioux Falls Sunday afternoon for Omaha where he will take his final physical exam for the Navy. Robert was a junior at Canton high school last year & enlisted before his 18th birthday which was July 8.
Pvt. Albert Barnes, Co. A, 20th Inf., of Camp San Luis Obispo, CA, spent several days of his furlough with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. E. A. Barnes. Mr. & Mrs. E. A. Barnes had as their dinner guests Sunday, Mr. & Mrs. John Bottger & 6 children in honor their son & brother, Albert Lee, who is home on a furlough. Mr. & Mrs. Barnes have 2 other sons, Ray who is on a defense job in AK, & Clarence who works in shipyards on the west coast.Mrs. Byron Mullinix entertained a few friends & relatives Friday afternoon in honor of the first birthday of her daughter Sandra Lee.
Troy Louderback of Rock Rapids called Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Ruby Nichols & Mrs. Cunningham.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Phillips received word by mail from the government that their oldest son LeRoy had arived safely at a new destination. He formerly has been on the west coast. Another son Ralph is on duty in the Pacific.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Cornelius & sons, & Mr. & Mrs. Eddy Carpenter & sons enjoyed a 4th of July picnic supper at the home of Mrs. James Carpenter.
Mr. & Mrs. Martain K. Halverson & Helena Stromme of Garretson spent Sunday & Monday at the O. J. Jacobson home. Other Sunday evening visitors were Mr. & Mrs. Rupert Larson of near Inwood & Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Larson & Jaloyce.
The Rev. & Mrs. Skoglund of Canton visited Wednesday afternoon at the Lingo Home.
Mr. & Mrs. L. A. Eastman were Sunday dinner guests at the Emil Klepel home at Canton.
Mrs. Oline Erwin of Canton visited Wednesday at the Albert Hendricks home.
Laverne Bovee of Sioux Falls spent the weekend with his mother Mr. Frank Welch.
Mr. & Mrs. Jack Carpenter & 3 daughters of near Fairview spent the 4th at the Fritz Pruse home in Sioux Falls.
Mr. & Mrs. C. J. Lingo & Nila Ann visited Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Frank Steffens of Hartford, WI who is visiting her mother Mrs. Dave Payne, sister Mrs. Dick Fait & 2 brothers Elie & Orval Payne, for a week's vacation.
