1870 Calf case litigation

HOLMES

I hope someone with a grasp of the legal history of Jones County can help me. In the 1897 History of O'Brien County, Iowa by D. A. W. Perkins I found the following statement:
"In 1871, Thos. Holmes came to O'Brien County from Jones County, the place where a calf case ruined several litigants."
Is anyone familar with this event or know where I can find how Thomas Holmes was involved?
