Monticello, Iowa was named after Thomas Jefferson's home outside of Charlottesville, Virginia but not sure who place it on it? Possibly a book published by the Monticello Express on the city's history "Monticello 1836-1988" will tell? I do know in 1836 it was originally named Varvelstown after Daniel Varvel of Kentucky.
