August 26, 1971 - The Anamosa Eureka

Sheila Ann Edwards, 15, died in a one-car accident a mile south of Martelle on highway 1 about 9:05 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1971.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Edwards of Anamosa, and would have been a sophomore at Anamosa school next week.

The Iowa Highway Patrol in Cedar Rapids said Miss Edwards was traveling south on highway 1 and apparently lost control as she met a semi rig. The patrol said the 1965 Valient she was driving swerved off the highway, into the ditch and rolled over several times, landing partially on her body.

She was believed dead at the scene, and was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's, Cedar Rapids where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The patrol explains that it is routine in Linn county to take accident patients to a Cedar Rapids hospital.

The accident was about a half mile south of the Jones-Linn county line. Miss Edwards reportedly was driving to Mt. Vernon to pick up a friend.

The patrol said there was no collision with the semi; the car was demolished when it rolled.

Early reports left confusion as to which Edwards sister was involved in the crash. First identification, apparently from a driver's license found in the car, indicated it was Brenda, but Brenda was visiting out of the state.

Sheila Ann Edwards, 15, was born March 18, 1956, the daughter of Clarence and Patricia Dunlap Edwards. She would have been a sophomore. She is survived by her parents, a half-sister, Mrs. Ray (Paula) Faye, Phoenix, Ariz.; a half-brother, Greg Holub with the U.S. air force in Japan; James and Brenda Edwards, at home; a great grandmother, Mrs. Lulabelle Peterson, Hammond, Ind.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27 at the United Methodist church, the Rev. Brown H. Garlock officiating.

Goettsch Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.
