Lifetime resident died at home of her daughter in OttumwaMrs. Bertha Maria HUDGEL, 66, lifetime resident of Jefferson county, passed away early Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Faith PETERS, 702 Ellis Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa (note: in Wapello Co., IA).
Mrs. HUDGEL was visiting her daughter at the time of her death, although her home was north of Fairfield.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. from the Weston Behner funeral home. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery.
They will be in charge of the Rev. J. W. Stine.
Mrs. HUDGEL was born in Jefferson county, Oct. 25, 1873. She was married to William D. HUDGEL September 5, 1893. He preceded her in death April 25, 1932.
She had been in poor health for a number of years. She had been an active member of the Congregational church in Fairfield till her marriage; then she joined the Methodist church.
She is survived by five children, Mrs. Faith PETERS, Ottumwa, Ia., Clara HUDGEL, Richland, Ia., Clyde, Hugh and Robert, Fairfield, Ia., one sister, Mrs. Emma C. ROSS, Fairfield, Ia., and eight grandchildren.

Mrs. Bertha M. HUDGEL, daughter of Samuel and Katie ROSS, was born in Jefferson county, Iowa Oct. 25, 1873. Passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Faith PETERS, Ottumwa, Iowa, Jan. 1, 1940. She was married to William D. HUDGEL, Sept. 5, 1893, who preceded her in death April 25, 1932. To this union six children were born, five of whom are now living, Clyde C, Hugh, and Robert of Fairfield, Mrs. Faith PETERS of Ottumwa, and Clara M. of Richland. One daugher (sic), Mary Ruth preceded her in death July 7, 1913. One sister, Mrs. Emma C. ROSS of Fairfield survives and eight grandchildren.
Her entire life was spent in Jefferson county.
She was an active church worker, being a member of the Congregational church in Fairfield until her marriage, then she joined the Methodist church and remained a member till her death. She was a charter member of the Women's Independence club of the Pleasant Grove neighborhood.
She had been in poor health a number of years but bore her afflictions with great patience. She was a loving mother and was greatly devoted to her family.
Funeral services were held at Behner Funeral home, Fairfield, Jan. 3, 1940 at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. J. W. Stine of Fairfield. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery.
