I do not know the name of the grocery store in Newton, but I do know that it opened in 1939; between 1931 and 1939, they owned a dairy and ice cream endeavor named, Donahue's Dairy, which was located across the street from the Maytag Washer Co.

The 7D Market in Artesia, CA, lasted at least until after "Big Grandma's [Doris Adair Donahue's (Shaffer)]" death, which I think was in 1979 or 1980. And yes, I am Kathi's son.

If I had to guess which brother opened the original store with Eugene, I would say Paul, because Joseph was quite a bit older than Eugene, Thomas died pretty young, and James faced debilitating injuries caused by an accident. I would look for the Newton grocery endeavor to have ceased between 1945 to around 1951-52 (my mother or Nancy may be able to narrow this down a bit). Based on a story I was told about my Japanese grandmother, Suzy Donahue, being refused service at the 7D in Artesia, CA., places the California grocery endeavor in operation no later than 1952-53. A female clerk working at the 7D did not know my grandfather, as he had been stationed overseas for several years; he and his wife Suzy, visited the 7D to buy some groceries, but were told, "We don't serve Japs," or something of that nature. Knowing my grandfather's pestilent temper, not to mention the fact that he was an Army Drill Sergeant, leads me to believe that the clerk's proclamation still holds the record in Artesia, CA, for being absolute worst proclamation promoting job security ever since.
