Ronald Clayton Young
October 22, 1951 - February 13, 2025

Ronald Clayton Young, age 73 of Monroe, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at his home. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 10:30 am at the Monroe Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 3:00 – 6:00 pm at the church. Attendees are welcomed to wear their favorite PCM or Iowa State attire.

The son of Orville Clayton Young II and Gloria Mildred (Nelson) Young, Ron was born on October 22, 1951 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Teresa Heater in 1977 in Morning Sun, Iowa. To this union they were blessed with children Kyle & Jill.

Raised on the family farm in Hancock, Iowa, Ron learned the value of hard work at a young age (along with the ability to sneak back to the house to watch an episode of Leave It To Beaver). He excelled in athletics while attending Shelby-Tenant schools graduating in the class of 1970. His love of athletics served as his inspiration to pursue a career path in education. Ron attended Iowa State University graduating in 1974. He later received his Master’s Degree from the University of Iowa.

He faithfully served the school districts of Morning Sun (74-76), Allison-Bristow (76-80), Belle Plaine (80-87), and PCM from 1987 until his retirement in 2007.

Ron served a variety of roles throughout his career: Social Studies Teacher; High School Softball, Football, and Basketball Coach; Driver’s Education Teacher; and High School and Middle School Principal. As Principal, he was actively visible and took great pride in supporting students both in and out of the classroom.

Retirement looked differently to Ron than to others. He would often get asked when he was going to slow down and enjoy his retirement. Working gave him a purpose, kept him connected, and allowed him to continue serving the PCM school district. He was eager to serve in any substitute capacity from preschool teacher to school bus driver, and would reach out to school officials with his availability rather than waiting to be asked. He was so proud to be a Mustang.

Ron started driving motorcoach for Windstar in 2002 as a “side-gig”. This job was the perfect fit for him to embrace his love of travel, connect with passengers, and have shared experiences. It was much more than driving to him - he became a part of the group. Whether he was fishing in Canada, painting fence during a week-long mission trip, or wearing a party hat for his travelers in Branson, he happily embraced every situation and opportunity that came his way. Driving bus tours with daughter Jill serving as Tour Director was a highlight for them both - often keeping their relationship as a secret until the end of the tour to delight their passengers with a surprise.

When he wasn’t working, Ron loved sharing time with his family and friends around the table with a board game. He made showing up to his grandsons activities a priority, which showed his care and support.

He was a loyal member of the Monroe Presbyterian Church and active in the church choir. Ron enjoyed yardwork, spending time with his grand-puppies, and watching any sporting event (new or old). He had fond memories of family vacations spent at U.S. National Parks.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Teresa; son, Kyle (Amber) Young; grandsons, Isaac, Oliver and Elliot Young; daughter, Jill; brothers, Larry Young and Brian (Alina) Young; step siblings, Phil Hobus, Sharyn (Phil) Zimmerman, Roger (Peggy) Hobus and Colleen (Ron) Taylor; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
