Mary J. Pherigo, 91, passed away on Thursday morning, August 29, 2024, at Newton Health Care, surrounded by her loved ones.

Mary was born September 2, 1932, near Clarence, Missouri, the daughter of Arthur and Lena (Stults) Knapp. She was a high school graduate.

On December 16, 1950, Mary was united in marriage with Bobby Dwaine Pherigo. A longtime resident of the Newton area, she devoted her life to her family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bobby; her son Gary; her sister; and six brothers.

At Mary’s request, her body was cremated. A Graveside service and burial will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton. A time of Celebration and visitation with the family will be at the Maytag Park, West Side Shelter, at 11:45 a.m., follow the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the family in Mary’s name or a charity of your choosing.

The Pence~Reese Funeral Home, in Newton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Those left to honor Mary’s memory include her daughters: Becky (George) Beston, Vickie (Steve) Van Steenwyk and Sandy Pherigo; her daughter-in-law Jackie Pherigo; her eight grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren; and her many friends. Mary’s family wants to thank everyone for their support at this time of loss.
