I am trying to identify a child named George Carey[sic] who was listed as a servant in the household of Avery West (or possibly Wert), in the 1900 census for Otter Creek Twp., Jackson Co., Iowa. Does anyone know who this boy is related to? The entry is as follows:
Avery West, male, Head, age 29, b.Jan 1871 in Indiana, par. b.North Carolina & Indiana, Married 3 years, Farmer, Can read and write.
Mary West, female, wife, age 27, b.Oct 1872 in Iowa, both par. b.Pennsylvania, Married 3 years, Mother of one child, one living, Can read and write.
Earl West, male, son, age 1, b.Jan 1899 in Iowa, par. b. Indiana & Iowa.
Salina Lenhart, female, boarder, age 66, b.June 1833 in Pennsylvania, both par. b. Pennsylvania, Widowed, Mother of 5 children, 4 living, Can read and write.
George Carey[sic], male, servant, age 14, b.Jan 1886 in Iowa, both par. b. Iowa, Farm laborer, Can read and write. If no one knows who he is, I have a possible theory as to his identity. I believe he may be the son of Margaret Jane Cairy, the daughter of Thomas & Mary A. (Thompson) Cairy (who were buried in Andrew, Jackson Co., Iowa.) Margaret married Levi Hayward in abt 1885, prob. in Jackson Co. She died on 6 Aug 1886, prob. of complications of childbirth since she died less than a week after giving birth to their son, George Levi Hayward. Her husband, Levi, remarried in Dec 1887, then died in 1890. I am attempting to locate their son in the census records for 1900. He is not listed with his stepmother or any other family member I recognize. I believe this George Carey[sic], is a possible candidate for that child. And is it possible that this Avery West is somehow related to the Cairys?
I appreciate any assistance you can give me on this. Have a great day!
