Dr. John E. Gilmore was born in Uniontown, Fayette county, Pa., Sept. 12, 1839 and died at his home in Baldwin, Iowa, Feb. 24th, 1923.
He was a veteran of the Civil War, enlisting in Company A, 26th Regiment of Iowa, Infantry Volunteers. During the war he was a prisoner for seven months at Danville, Virginia and other prisons, where he suffered untold agonies which impaired his health for life. During the war Dr. Gilmore was assistant surgeon. He entered the Keokuk Medical School following his discharge and was graduated in 1867. He taught the S. S. Bible class for a number of years. He joined the Masonic lodge about 50 years ago.
His last request was that he be laid to rest by his Masonic Brothers.
On Oct. 30, 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Ann Lefter at Hamilton, Ill., and is survived by his wife, one son, Dr. E. L. Gilmore of Tallapoosa, Georgia, one daughter, Lynne G. DeVallejo of Buenos Aires, South America.
Those from out of town attending the funeral were, Mrs. Eugene Gilmore, of Tallapoosa, Ga., Dr. E. G. Lefter, Waterloo, Iowa and A. O. Bishop of Marshalltown, Iowa.
The funeral was held at the M. E. Church with Rev. D. C. Perry assisted by Mr. Bishop, pastor of the Methodist church, Minerva, Iowa and the Masonic lodge of Wyoming, Monmouth and Baldwin, Iowa.
