Martha Brown was born in Crawford county, Pa., September 15, 1836, and died at Maquoketa on June 1, 1915, being nearly 79 years of age. She came west with her parents in 1854. Ten years later in 1874, she was married To J. S. Bascom and thereafter they resided in and about Preston. Mrs. Bascom is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ward of Newton, Kansas, and Mrs. Burdick of Minnesota, and one brother, William Brown of Preston, also four step-children, one daughter and three sons. Though Mrs. Bascom was full of years and ready to be gathered home, yet her going causes her relatives and the great number of dear friends keen regret and deep sorrow. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 o'clock at the Congregational church, Rev. Gary officiating, interment being made in the Preston cemetery.
